Kari Cameron began her early dance training and performing at the Conservatory Ballet of Reston, VA under its director Julia Reddick and continued her dance education in Columbia S.C. where she attended Columbia College as a scholarship dance major. Kari was a member of the South Carolina Ballet Theater where she performed, taught, and choreographed with the company and its affiliated Columbia Ballet School. After her marriage and relocation to Newport, RI, Kari danced ballet and modern at Newport Academy of Ballet and performed with its company The Island Moving Company.
Finally settling in Maine to raise a family, Kari started classes at the People to People Dance Studio and resumed performing and choreographing as well with the affiliated Atlantic Ballet Company. Kari founded Rockport Dance Conservatory in 2007, fostering the joy of dance in students of all ages until 2022. Kari teaches classes mainly based on the technique of the Russian Vaganova style, incorporating kinesiology and anatomy to help dancers with body awareness, and she encourages strengthening the body core and attention to musicality. She enjoys the blending of dance genres for versatility and freedom of expression. Besides choreography for Showcases, regional/national dance competitions, and local events, her ballet choreography “Cello Promenade” was chosen for performance in Portland, Me 2009 Portland Dances!. Kari also is a creative force in costume design and execution and has had costumes featured in Dance Spirit Magazine’s dance competition article “Trend Watch” in the October 2009 issue.
Kari joined the faculty of Camden Ballet Theatre in 2023. When not dancing, Kari is busy sewing for her apparel business from her home studio in Lincolnville.
